Mountain Zebra

Amenities: Eighteen, four-bed, well-equipped chalets at the tourist rest camp, 20 caravan and camping facilities; launderette, conference hall, restaurant, shop, petrol, swimming pool. Doornhoek guest cottage (historic, renovated farmhouse) sleeps 6. Meals are available from the restaurant; a shop supplies basic commodities.
Comments: Situated in the Mountain Zebra National Park, mountains, birds, plants and animals in lovely surroundings. Offers viewing of Cape mountain zebra as well as springbok, eland, blesbok, black wildebeest, red hartebeest and many other Cape Midland animals. Largely devoid of trees except along the riverbanks and high up in the valleys on the northern slopes of the Bankberg, where bird life is abundant. About 37 km of good gravel roads traverse the Eastern Midlands Nama Karoo vegetation. The rare booted eagle is one of the 255 species of birds recorded in the Park.

Two Tunnels

Location: The trail starts (and finishes) at the Veldskoen Padstal (532m ASL) on the N1, 3km beyond De Doorns (travelling from Cape Town).
Description: Definitely the main attraction on the Two Tunnels Mountain Bike Trail is the ride through one of the twin tunnels through which the original railway line ran. There are optional detours to the Kaffrarian Rifles Memorial (almost 900m ASL), erected on the spot where nine British soldiers lost their lives when their troop train derailed in 1914, and to Appaskop (850m ASL) which offers breathtaking views of the Hex River Valley and the Matroosberg Mountains. The main route of about 20 km is moderate, but includes a few steep climbs. Optional detours extend the route to about 35km. While many serious mountain bikers enjoy the challenge the trail has to offer, it is also quite suitable for family- and group excursions. Picnic or self-catering camping facilities are available at Tunnel Station (near the halfway mark). Firewood and tents can be provided. Other accommodation facilities are available throughout the region.

Lammergeier Adventure

Description: The reserve, some 7 500 ha, a holistically managed family farm (winner of the prestigious Grasslands Conservation Farmer of the Year in 1997) is located in the Witteberg range, and is named after the endangered bearded vulture (lammergeier). There are some 282 species of birds, including the Cape vulture, black eagle, jackal buzzard, and crowned cranes. Game includes several species of small antelope, lynx, jackal, wildcat and red hare. Summers are mild to hot, while winters are cold with snowfalls. The only farm in South Africa growing Organic and natural grown wheat with Stoneground Wheatmill that supplies local bakers and Health food market. Comments: The reserve, some 7 500 ha, a holistically managed family farm (winner of the prestigious Grasslands Conservation Farmer of the Year in 1997) is located in the Witteberg range, and is named after the endangered bearded vulture (lammergeier). There are some 282 species of birds, including the Cape vulture, black eagle, jackal buzzard, and crowned cranes. Game includes several species of small antelope, lynx, jackal, wildcat and red hare. Summers are mild to hot, while winters are cold with snowfalls. The only farm in South Africa growing Organic and natural grown wheat with Stoneground Wheatmill that supplies local bakers and health food market. The landscape within which the Thabaphaswa hiking and mountain bike trail lies, is reminiscent of the Motopo hills further north. "Thabaphaswa" means in the local dialect, "the black and white mountain" - a well known landmark to all the local inhabitants and tribes of the area. It describes the colouring patterns of the indigenous Nguni animals. Sheltered by its enclosing hills, Groenkom farm lies in a natural basin and makes a wonderful bushveld retreat. The Thabaphaswa mountain towers over the adjacent hills. The network of hiking trails offers the ideal opportunity for nature lovers to discover the variety of game, bird and plant-life of this area. The beautiful scenery has been complemented by the design of the overnight camps which are camouflaged between the big boulders on the farm which blend into the landscape. Overnight facilities: Dome Rock base camp: Four huts with 6/7 beds/mattresses. Each hut has own boma, two plate gas stove, kettle, pots, potjies, pans, washing up area. Braaifacility. Ablutions - reed enclosed showers, flush toilets. Paraffin lamps. Fridge. Kanniedood camp: 14 beds/mattresses. Same facilities as Dome Rock. Die Pomphuisie: Fully equipped cottage for two persons.

Description: Langberg offers two day circular trails of 14 km and 8 km. Excellent views, caves, interesting rock formations, mountain stream with rock pools. TheBase Camp: Horse Stable camp - renovated old barn - offers an historical double story building dating from the early 1900's. It can accommodate 11 hikers. The lower level: Two rooms with a double beds each and en suite bathroom. Top level: Two rooms each with two single beds per room. One room with a single bed and a bunk bed. Separate shower and toilet on lower level. LINEN PROVIDED: (Duvet sets and 1 x pillow) Electricity: The kitchen is equipped with a fridge and deep freeze, gas braaier, pots, pans, cast iron pots and kettles. Cutlery, crockery,. Indoor fire place and bar. Braai facilities area outside. Bring only your own towels.
